Legal Questions

Juvenile crime in Tamil Nadu is governed by the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 (Central Act No. 2 of 2016), which applies across all states including Tamil Nadu. Persons below 18 years of age who are in conflict with the law are brought before the Juvenile Justice Board and are not tried in regular criminal courts. Tamil Nadu also has the Tamil Nadu Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Rules, 2017, which govern the local implementation of this Act.

Under Section 82 of the Indian Penal Code, a child below 7 years of age cannot be held criminally responsible. Under Section 83, a child between 7 and 12 years may be exempt if found to lack sufficient maturity. For juveniles aged 16 to 18 accused of heinous offences, the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 allows the Juvenile Justice Board to assess and potentially recommend trial as an adult by the Children's Court.

Property registration in Tamil Nadu is governed by the Registration Act, 1908 (Central Act), which mandates compulsory registration of documents relating to immovable property. Stamp duty on such instruments is governed by the Tamil Nadu Stamp Act, 2022 (Tamil Nadu Act No. 21 of 2022). The Tamil Nadu Registration Department administers both registration and stamp duty collection across the state.

Rent and tenancy disputes in Tamil Nadu are primarily governed by the Tamil Nadu Buildings (Lease and Rent Control) Act, 1960 (Tamil Nadu Act No. 18 of 1960). This Act regulates the lease of buildings, controls rent, and provides grounds for eviction. Disputes are adjudicated before the Rent Control Court. The Act applies to residential and non-residential buildings in notified areas across Tamil Nadu.

The standard citation format is: [Full Act Name], [Year], Tamil Nadu Act No. [X] of [Year], Section [Y].
For example: Tamil Nadu Buildings (Lease and Rent Control) Act, 1960, Tamil Nadu Act No. 18 of 1960, Section 10.
The Act number, year, and full title are all available on the Act Details page of this repository.

A Principal Act is the original, standalone legislation enacted by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. An Amendment Act is a subsequent law that modifies, substitutes, inserts, or deletes specific sections of an existing Principal Act. Amendment Acts do not stand alone — they must be read alongside the Principal Act they amend.

An Updated Principal Act is a consolidated version of the original legislation with all subsequent amendments already incorporated into the text. You can read the current, in-force version of the law as a single document without needing to cross-reference multiple amendment acts. The Updated Principal Acts section of this repository contains these consolidated versions.

On the Act Details page, click the G.O.s tab. This tab lists all Government Orders issued under the authority of that Act. G.O.s contain executive directions, notifications, and appointments made by the Government of Tamil Nadu in exercise of powers granted by the Act.
