Key terms explained
The categories use legal terms. Here's what each one means.
- Updated Principal Act
- The Act as it stands today, with later amendments already incorporated. Start here to read the current law.
- Principal Act
- The Act exactly as first passed and published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette.
- Amendment Act
- An Act that changes an existing Act by adding, replacing or removing provisions.
- Ordinance
- A temporary law made by the Governor when the Legislative Assembly is not in session. It is later replaced by an Act or lapses.
- Bill
- A proposed law introduced in the Legislative Assembly. Once passed and assented to, it becomes an Act.
- Statement of Objects and Reasons (SOR)
- The explanation published with a Bill of why the law is needed and what it aims to do.
- Subordinate Legislation
- Rules, Regulations, Notifications, Government Orders (G.O.s), Statutes and Bye-laws made under powers an Act gives.
- State Amendment to a Central Act
- A Tamil Nadu law that changes how a Central (India) Act applies within the State.
- Repealed Act
- An Act that has been withdrawn and is no longer in force. It stays listed for reference.
- Not yet notified
- An Act that has been passed but has not yet been brought into force by notification.
